About the Department

Overview of Geology Department

The Department of Geology at Woldia University was established in 2012 G.C as teaching and research department of the University. Through the years, there have been significant curriculum revisions which have taken into account new ideas and advances in the field. In addition to the academic exercises, the Department playing a significant role in enhancing North Wollo and Waghimra zone, Amhara region, Ethiopia, natural resource development in areas of:

  • Assessment, Evaluation and potential site selection for construction materials
  • Geological and Mineral Resource Mapping, Iron Exploration, Zinc exploration
  •  Initiations and undertaking of major research projects in the broad fields of Geology, and Service to the public, government and private sectors.

Programs Rational

Department of Geology offers undergraduate program aimed to produce Geologists with a broad understanding of geosciences, which can: Do professional work in various ministries, companies engaged in activities related to the broad fields of geoscience and Identify geological problems and work towards their solution through independent or collaborative research. To achieve the above goals students also practice (learn) in laboratories and fields. Currently, we do have three batches which are 53 in number. Graduates of the Department would follow jobs in governmental organizations such as Mines, Energy, Water works; Engineering Geological works, Highway Authority, Agriculture; Geology-based Industries; and Public and service giving companies.

 In addition to academic exercises; department of Geology played a significant role in research and community service. Our Department made collaborative efforts with Amhara mine agency.

Vision

Following the vision of our university department of Geology also has a vision of Becoming the top Department among similar Department in education, Research and community service in Ethiopia by 2029G.C.

Mission

  • High Quality Teaching and learning of undergraduate students to produce Geologists with a broad understanding of geosciences
  • Conducting researches and community service in geosciences to improve and generate new knowledge, and
  • Giving professional service to the community
