About the Department

The Department of Chemistry at Woldia University is one of the founder academic
departments of the University, playing an important role in the establishment and subsequent
development of the institution. Since its establishment, the Department has contributed to the
University’s mission of producing competent professionals, generating knowledge through
research, and responding to the scientific and technological needs of the surrounding
community.
The Department is housed within the College of Natural and Computational Sciences
(CNCS) and offers chemistry education and training with emphasis on the major areas of
chemistry, including Analytical, Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Industrial, and Environmental
Chemistry. The current curriculum has been revised to strengthen competency-based and
outcome-based education, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills,
research capability, professional ethics, innovation, sustainability, and lifelong learning.
The Department has a multidisciplinary academic staff comprising PhD and MSc holders
with specializations across the major branches of chemistry. The curriculum indicates that the
Department currently has 17 academic staff and 4 academic technical assistants, providing
the human-resource foundation necessary for teaching, laboratory activities, research, and
community engagement.
In addition to teaching and learning, the Department is increasingly oriented toward problemsolving research, innovation, industrial linkage, and community service. Its academic and cocurricular activities emphasize practical and industrial applications of chemistry, quality
control, environmental protection, green chemistry, materials science, computational
chemistry, and entrepreneurship. It has General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical,
Computational Chemistry and Research/Instrumental laboratories. The Department also seeks
to strengthen partnerships with industries and other stakeholders to enhance students’
practical exposure and employability.
As a founder department, the Department of Chemistry has therefore played a continuing role
in the academic growth, scientific development, and community engagement of Woldia
University. Moving forward, it aims to build on this foundation by strengthening the quality
of chemistry education, expanding impactful research and innovation, enhancing industry and
community partnerships, and producing competent, ethical, innovative, and globally
competitive chemistry professionals. This direction is consistent with Woldia University’s
aspiration to become one of the five preferable universities in teaching and research by 2029.
