About the Department

Department Profile

The Department of Mathematics at Woldia University, under the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, is one of the founding departments of the university, established in 2011. Since its inception, the department has been committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Initially, the department began with 11 staff members, and it has now grown to a team of 33, with 4 members currently on study leave while the rest actively engage in academic duties.
Programs Offered:

  • Undergraduate Programs: The department has been delivering a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics since its establishment. The program is available as a Regular program and, since 2015, as a Summer In-Service program.
  • Postgraduate Programs: To address the growing demand for advanced studies, the department offers two Master’s programs: MSc in Mathematical Modeling and MSc in Algebra, MSc in Numerical Analysis, MSc in Combinatorics and MSc in Functional Analysis.

Facilities: The department is equipped with a computational laboratory featuring computers installed with essential mathematical software ( like; MATLAB, GeoGebra, Phyton, Mathematica, LaTex). This facility provides students and faculty with the necessary tools to conduct research and enhance their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Rationale

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering a profound understanding of mathematics as the backbone of science and technology. Recognizing its central role in theoretical exploration and practical applications across natural sciences, engineering, economics, and social sciences, our department aims to prepare students with robust mathematical skills essential for problem-solving and innovation. Through a comprehensive and updated curriculum, we focus on cultivating analytical thinking, mathematical modeling, and quantitative communication abilities to meet global and local challenges. Our programs are designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications, addressing the evolving needs of industry and research. Emphasizing practical experience and rigorous thought, we strive to develop graduates equipped for lifelong learning and capable of contributing meaningfully to the nation’s development and technological progress. This commitment aligns with the government’s efforts to produce skilled professionals essential for national growth and achieving developmental milestones

Vision

The vision of the department is By 2022 E.C., to be recognized as one of the leading mathematics departments in the top five education and research universities of Ethiopia

Mission

The missions of the department are:

  •  To produce competent professionals equipped with strong mathematical knowledge, problemsolving skills, and ethical values, who will contribute meaningfully to national development.
  • To conduct and disseminate high-quality, solution-oriented research and promote multidisciplinary community engagement that addresses societal needs.

Future Plans

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to continuous growth and development.

Our future plans include:

  • Launching new postgraduate programs with specialized areas of study to broaden academic opportunities for students.
  • Achieving national and international accreditation to enhance the department’s credibility and global recognition.
